St BOTOLPH'S CHOIR IN VENICE
The choir of St Botolph's was thrilled to give two concerts during a weekend visit to Venice. Under the direction of Tim Brown and Roland Robertson, the choir gave a programme of Tudor masterpieces at the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, as well as a Sunday morning Eucharist and recital at St George's, the English Church in Venice.
CHOIR AND ORGAN
The choir continues to grow steadily and we've been delighted to welcome several strong new recruits since Christmas. Highlights have included lots of classic music for Epiphany and Candlemas as well as a memorable collaboration Evensong, with music by Bruckner and Pierre Villette, in honour of the BVM with the choir of Corpus Christi College. Organ Scholar Saul Knights gave a superb and well-attended organ recital to start our Spring Concert series in style, with music ranging from Bach to Rheinberger and Vierne.
MEDIAEVAL CHANT WORKSHOP
The choir enjoyed a workshop learning about Gregorian chant, leading to performance of an authentic pre-Reformation candlelit Vespers for Candlemas in the church. Director Roland Robertson brought his own chant performing experience and expertise to lead this event which was very well received and likely to become an annual highlight of the winter months at Botolph's.
ASH WEDNESDAY
The choir celebrated this important feast with the music of Thomas Tallis, giving stirring performances of both the penitential motet In ieiunio et fletu, and the famous Litany, closely modelled on the original words and music of 1544.
The musical riches of Lent and Easter await us, alongside a varied and attractive series of concerts taking advantage of the fine piano and impressive acoustics of St Botolph's
